Maximum Vacation: The Bridge Days Infographic 2026
What better way to start the new year than with smart vacation planning? Although 2026 has an exceptionally high number of holidays falling on weekends - making it not friendly for bridge days - with the right strategy, many days off can still be obtained. Those who use their vacation days wisely can make the most of the calendar for relaxation and experiences in the new year.
The travel experts at Travelcircus have again analyzed the best bridge days for 2026 and show how to perfectly utilize extended weekends and short breaks with targeted planning - including inspiration for suitable travel destinations.
- In a state with 30 vacation days, you can enjoy up to 67 days off
- Double the smart combinations: Two vacation phases in April (Easter and Labor Day) ensure particularly long breaks
- No bridge days in the fall? Then better make use of it: October and August offer perfect conditions for individual breaks despite an unfavorable holiday situation
- Despite many holidays falling on weekends: Well-planned breaks can maximize 2026
- Half of the 20 holidays fall on weekends in 2026
- Significant differences between states: While Bavaria has 14 holidays, Berlin, Bremen, Hesse, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, and Schleswig-Holstein only have 10
Approach
For the year 2026, the Travelcircus team has recorded a total of 20 different holidays in the U.S. These include both regional and nationwide public holidays, carefully compiled from various sources. An infographic presents all the vacation days clearly by month. The holidays are highlighted in red, while the recommended vacation periods are marked by frames. If a holiday applies only in certain states, they are indicated by corresponding abbreviations in the monthly overview.
To optimally use the vacation days, Travelcircus's travel experts offer inspiring vacation tips for each month. These include visual impressions and information about temperatures at the respective travel destinations.
January: Slide into the Long Weekend!
January 1, 2026 (New Year's Day) falls on a Thursday - with just one vacation day, the weekend will be extended right at the start of the year! And in states like Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Saxony-Anhalt, there's even more: January 6 (Epiphany) falls on a Tuesday - if you're smart, you take another day off here and enjoy the next break. Once again, just one vacation day is sufficient for the next break. And those who plan wisely can grab four vacation days from January 7 to 10, making it a whopping 9 consecutive days off. That's how you start the new year!
March: Women's Day Falls Flat? No Problem - The Month Still Brings Spring Feelings!
March 8, 2026 (International Women's Day) falls on a Sunday - and unfortunately, this means disappointment for all holiday fans in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. No bridge day, no long weekend. But: March has more to offer than just calendar frustration! First rays of sunshine, blooming landscapes, and mild temperatures make it the perfect time for spontaneous short trips - even without a holiday joker.
April: Plan Easter Instead of Searching - Here's How to Get It Right!
Easter 2026 offers an ideal opportunity for an extended spring break: With just four vacation days around Good Friday (April 3), Easter Sunday (April 5), and Easter Monday (April 6), you can enjoy up to ten consecutive days off - perfect for an extended short vacation. At the end of April, there's a follow-up opportunity: If you also file for four vacation days around Labor Day on May 1, you can look forward to another generous break. Two clever vacation phases in one month - ideal for relaxation and renewed energy.
May: May Means Mobility: Three Holidays, Many Opportunities
May is one of the best months for relaxing short vacations - two holidays invite clever breaks. Ascension Day on May 14 is perfect for an extended weekend or even nine days off with just 4 vacation days. If you're planning later in the month, you can also snag several days off around Whit Monday on May 25. One month, two strong vacation opportunities - ideal for spontaneous spring trips.
June Indulgence: One Day for a Long Weekend
Corpus Christi on June 4 falls on a Thursday, creating an ideal bridge day opportunity in several states. With just one vacation day, you can plan an extended weekend - perfect for enjoying the early summer with Mediterranean flair. Whether it's a short trip to the lake, a city break, or simply relaxing days in nature: June provides excellent conditions for a bit of Dolce Vita.
No Bridge Luck in August - But Plenty of Sunshine!
In August, unfortunately, it's a holiday lost! The Augsburg Peace Festival on August 8 does not bring any extra leisure time in Augsburg, as this date falls on a Saturday. Likewise, the Assumption Day on August 15, a public holiday in Bavaria and Saarland, also falls on a Saturday this year - no bridge day potential.
September: No Bridge Day, But Still Time for a Late Summer Trip
World Children's Day on September 20 is a special holiday celebrated only in Thuringia. Unfortunately, it falls on a Sunday in 2026, meaning there's no bridge day for an extended weekend. Nevertheless, September offers a great opportunity to enjoy the last warm days of the year and savor late summer.
October: No Bridge, But Plenty of Autumn Magic
In October 2026, two holidays fall on a Saturday - both German Unity Day on October 3 and Reformation Day on October 31 (in several states) do not offer bridge day options this year. Yet the golden autumn invites enjoyment: Whether it's a mountain hiking trip, a relaxing wellness weekend, or a spontaneous break in the colorful leaves - even without a bridge day, October is a highlight for those seeking relaxation.
November: Escape the Gray Weather
Although All Saints' Day on November 1 in the affected states falls on a Sunday and thus brings no extra leisure time, the month is not entirely lost: The Day of Repentance and Thanksgiving on November 18 offers a rare opportunity for relaxation in Saxony. Those taking two vacation days here could enjoy five consecutive days off - perfect for escaping the dreary November weather and recharging.
December: Long Christmas Weekend and More with Minimal Vacation
The Christmas holidays in 2026 fall favorably for a relaxing break: The first Christmas Day on December 25 falls on a Friday - thus resulting in at least a long weekend without an extra vacation day. Although the second Christmas Day on December 26 falls on a Saturday without any extra benefit, those who take four vacation days between Christmas and New Year's can enjoy up to ten consecutive days off. Additionally, with four vacation days before Christmas Eve, the often stressful Advent period can be transformed into a relaxed winter break.
