Snow Magic in Europe

Gray, cold, wet, and a bit muddy - this is how most Germans experience winter in their own country. Especially in Northern Germany, fine white snow is unfortunately rather rare. In the Alps, the Harz mountains, or in Allgäu, however, snow enthusiasts can dive into the snowfall each year, build snowmen, or race down steep slopes.

To escape the gray dreariness, a vacation often helps. Some are drawn to warmth while others are lured by plenty of snow. But where in Europe is there still enough snow in February and March? Travelcircus analyzed the average snowfall and temperatures in February and March in numerous locations and compiled a list of 11 beautiful places with snow guarantees.

Alongside winter vacation classics like Austria and Scandinavia, there are also a few surprises!

Snowfall and Snow Height

But how much snow is that? Few people can immediately convert precipitation into actual snow. It's not that simple as it depends on many different factors like altitude, wind, and climate.

Depending on the type of snow, the snow height at various locations can be calculated using this rule of thumb:

  • Very wet snow: 1 mm of snowfall = < 1 cm of new snow
  • Normal snow: 1 mm of snowfall = 1 cm of new snow
  • Dry powder snow: 1 mm of snowfall = 2 + cm of new snow

The 11 Places with Snow Guarantee at a Glance

Of course, the type of snow can vary daily, so the figures provided are merely guidelines.

The selected locations are not ranked, but rather a colorful, or should we say snow-white, mix of snow destinations across Europe, all equally worth a visit.

Off to Santa Claus in Rovaniemi

Ho ho ho - but wait, Christmas in February and March? In the enchanting Rovaniemi in Finland, the Christmas spirit is present all year round. The capital of Lapland is, after all, the official home of Santa Claus. Just 8 km from the city center, Santa Claus Village, Santa Claus, and his busy elves look forward to visitors from around the world year-round.

But Rovaniemi has much more to offer: Husky sledding tours through the snow, hikes through the snowy forests of Lapland, the mesmerizing Northern Lights, or even ice swimming. With an average of 160 cm of snow and -7.5 °C in February and March, this charming city at the Arctic Circle promises an unforgettable winter vacation.

City Trip in the Snow? Off to Oslo!

It's often a tough decision whether to go into the snow or to indulge in a city trip. Fortunately, you don't always have to choose, as some enchanting capitals in Europe are blessed with a large amount of snow. These include Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, and the beautiful Norwegian capital Oslo, where an average of about 152 cm of snow falls in February and March.

Oslo is undoubtedly beautiful in every season. However, when the Scandinavian metropolis drapes itself in soft snow, everything becomes a little quieter and more dreamy. At a chilly -2 °C outdoors, one can observe the snow falling while enjoying a warm coffee in one of Oslo's many trendy bars and cafés.

Average -13 °C: Icy, Icier, Longyearbyen

Is Oslo not cold enough? Then head to Northern Norway to Longyearbyen. Svalbard may not be on everyone's bucket list, but especially snow fans should change that as soon as possible. 238.15 mm of snowfall or about 238 cm of snow, endless expanses, polar bears, and of course the dancing Northern Lights speak for themselves.

Admittedly, -13 °C can be quite frosty, but wrapped up warmly in a cabin by the fireplace or in a sauna, a vacation in Longyearbyen becomes all the cozier. The cold guarantees not only snow but also some peace from mass tourism.

What would a list of snowy destinations be without Austria? Thanks to its fantastic location in and around the Alps, our neighbors receive significantly more snow than we do. In addition to well-known winter sports resorts like Ischgl, Kitzbühel, or St. Anton, where ski and snowboard enthusiasts flock during the winter months, Austria also has numerous smaller and lesser-known snow destinations to offer.

With just 330 inhabitants, Damüls in Vorarlberg is truly manageable. However, one fact makes this small village world-famous: it is the snowiest village in the entire world! With an average of 800 cm of snow or a snowfall of 384.15 mm in February and March, this title is well-deserved!

Arâches-la-Frasse, a French Alpine Dream

A vacation in the Alps can be so beautiful, even in the stunning France. In the charming municipality of Arâches-la-Frasse, about 400 cm of snow falls on average, and the temperature is around 0.5 °C in February and March. So much snow brings nearly endless possibilities, from wild snowball fights to exciting slope adventures to the finest winter romance. The most beautiful locations in the municipality in the French Alps include Flaine, Les Carroz, and La Frasse.

Snow Paradise in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

With the perfect location near the Zugspitze and the picturesque Eibsee, as well as an average snowfall of 206 mm, which can mean a wonderful 200 to 400 cm of snow depending on snow consistency, the stunning location in Bavaria truly doesn't have to hide behind other European winter destinations.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a snow-white paradise for all winter sports enthusiasts. At a cool 1 °C, it's time to dress warmly and dive into the fun. There are so many different options: skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoe hiking, biathlon, or even sledding. It doesn't matter if you're already an experienced ski acrobat or want to learn, luckily there are numerous ski schools on site.

The winter sports resort is also world-famous for another sport: ski jumping. The impressive ski jump is the venue for the second jump of the Four Hills Tournament and can even be visited on Saturdays.

Romantic Snow Walks in Zakopane

With average chilly -2 °C and about 185 cm of snow (or a snowfall of 185.75 mm), the holiday resort at the foot of the Tatra Mountains transforms each year into a beautiful winter wonderland. It's no surprise that Zakopane, also called the 'Winter Capital of Poland', is very popular among both Polish and international tourists.

Zakopane is sure to ring a bell for winter sports enthusiasts and ski jump fans. In addition to six ski areas, Zakopane has an ice skating rink and five ski jumping hills. Regularly, World Cup events take place on the most famous one. Those looking for a bit more adrenaline should definitely try ski-gliding - a thrilling mix of paragliding and alpine skiing.

Heavenly chocolate, delicious cheese, and endless fine snow - which country are we talking about here? Of course, the beautiful Switzerland. Just like the Austrians, the Swiss can look forward to plenty of snow each year due to their fantastic location in the Alps.

When thinking of Scotland, one might not first think of a ski vacation, but rather of hiking, mystical castles, and particularly dreamy places. However, especially in Cairngorms National Park, there are beautiful snowy landscapes and fast slopes that are more suitable for advanced skiers as they are a bit rougher than, for example, those in Austria.

Fortunately, there are many more snowy adventures to experience in the national park. How about a day at the reindeer farm near Aviemore? If you arrive early enough, you have the opportunity to hike directly to the herd on the mountain with a tour guide. Especially in the snow, that's a truly unique experience!

With an average temperature of 2 °C, it is also a bit milder than many other winter destinations. Snowfall in Cairngorms National Park averages 97.75 mm, which with good snow conditions results in still 100 to 200 cm of snow.

The Surprise at the End: Winter Vacation in Spain?!

When thinking of Spain, one does not usually instantly think of an exciting winter vacation, right? Much more often, vibrant metropolises like Barcelona and Madrid, breathtaking beaches, and beautiful islands like Mallorca or the Canaries come to mind. However, the popular holiday country is also extremely popular among hikers and winter sports enthusiasts from all over the world.

Among the most popular and exclusive winter destinations in Spain is undoubtedly the Baqueira-Beret ski resort. Snow-sure slopes, a fantastic atmosphere, and Spanish joie de vivre transform the small town of Baqueira into a winter wonderland in the Pyrenees each year. Due to the altitude, Baqueira averages about 300 cm of snow in the valley - up on the mountain, it's even significantly more! Admittedly, a vacation in Baqueira isn't necessarily cheap, but here you might just run into a celebrity snow bunny every now and then.

Conclusion: Europe is a Magical Winter Wonderland

Winter in Europe can be so beautiful and snowy. Those eager for winter sports and powder snow travel to the mountains; those looking for wellness in the snow should go to Austria or Scandinavia, and those who prefer city trips have a wide selection of snow-friendly city trips to enchanting European metropolises.

It truly becomes quite a challenge to decide, as numerous places with a snow guarantee beckon from Scandinavia through Germany and Austria all the way to Spain and even Andorra - and this also in February and March, and depending on the location sometimes even beyond.

Winter in Europe can be icy in many places, such as Svalbard. However, as our grandmothers always said, there is no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. In winter, it's either about bundling up warmly and diving into the snowstorm or cozying up indoors under a warm blanket with hot cocoa - both are dreamy concepts!
