The Top 10 Attractions in Scotland at a Glance
Scotland has a lot to offer. You can visit historic sites rich in stories, explore impressive castles, or discover long-forgotten roads. In addition to castles, fortresses, museums, and architecturally remarkable country houses, there are also numerous parks, nature reserves, lochs, and botanical gardens to admire.
There's also a culinary scene featuring distilleries, breweries, and farmers' markets. Not to forget, of course, the picturesque landscapes with green valleys, crystal-clear lakes, and rugged coasts.
We didn't take our selection lightly; below you'll find our top 10 most popular attractions in Scotland.
Place 1: Loch Ness
A trip to Scotland wouldn't be complete without searching for Nessie yourself. The most famous lake monster is said to reside in Loch Ness. Over 1,000 eyewitness reports continue to puzzle scientists about whether Nessie ever existed and if it still exists today.
In Search of the Lake Monster
From the charming little town of Inverness, you can enjoy a leisurely boat tour to Loch Ness. You'll quickly notice the often high waves and the almost black water.
Don't forget your camera, because if Nessie pops out of the water, you'll want to snap that unique selfie. Be sure to take a walk through the untouched nature of the romantic Trossachs National Park afterward.
Urquhart Castle. Feel free to link your boat tour with a brief stop at Urquhart Castle in Drumnadrochit on your way from or to Inverness.
Place 2: Arthur's Seat
Once you arrive in Edinburgh, you'll feel transported to another world. The Old Town and parts of the New Town are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
In addition to classic sightseeing, you can even go hiking in Edinburgh. Best to our Place 2, Arthur's Seat.
On a 251-meter-high hill lies the cone of an extinct volcano from which you can enjoy stunning views all the way to the North Sea. If you consider yourself more of a casual tourist, you should think twice about climbing. There are no paved paths to Arthur's Seat, so the ascent can be quite strenuous.
Place 3: Stirling Castle and Edinburgh Castle
Stirling is the smallest city in Scotland. However, it was for a long time the capital of the country.
Stirling Castle
Stirling Castle is the main attraction of the city. From the old castle complex, you get magnificent views of the surrounding landscapes. Just about an hour from Stirling, you reach the Scottish capital, Edinburgh.
Edinburgh Castle
There's also a wonderful old castle to visit in Edinburgh. Edinburgh Castle is arguably the most famous in all of Scotland. It houses the Crown Jewels of Scotland and offers extensive tours. Learn everything about the history and architecture of the castle.
Place 4: Highlands
A tour through the Highlands will enchant you and guarantee to stay in memory for a long time. Spectacular landscapes meet historic castles here.
Along the mystical lochs of the country, you can immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscape of the Highlands and forget everything else for a moment. Passing the beautiful lakes, you'll see high peaks and fairy-tale castles. Some of the most beautiful castles include:
- Dunvegan Castle
- Brodie Castle
- Castle of Mey
Place 5: Calton Hill
Calton Hill in Edinburgh is a hill in the western part of the city and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
At the top, the main attractions are the Observatory, the National Monument, an Acropolis, and the Nelson Monument.
The latter is a tower with a large black ball that is raised from the top at 12:30 PM and then falls back down at 1:00 PM, signaling precisely when ships could set their clocks to 1 PM in the past.
You get a wonderful view for free when climbing Calton Hill.
Place 6: Royal Yacht Britannia Edinburgh
The Britannia, the former floating palace of the Queen, was home to Queen Elizabeth for 40 years. Today it is not anchored at Ocean Drive in Edinburgh, but likely permanently docked.
Back then, it took Charles and Diana on their honeymoon, and today you can view this story and much more in a small exhibition before visiting the ship.
Once you board the ship, you first enter the impressive bridge. There is also the grand saloon, the living room, and of course the lower decks with the crew quarters.
There was and is nothing more to feel of luxury and elegance there, unlike in the saloon and living room. Finally, in the lowest area, you will find the engine room. Last but not least, you can also inspect the royal tender used to bring passengers ashore when the ship couldn't dock.
Place 7: Glencoe
Welcome to Glencoe. The James Bond film 'Skyfall' from 2012 was shot right here.
Popular Film Location
Glencoe provided an incredible backdrop with breathtaking landscapes that are unmatched. Glencoe lies in the heart of the Highlands and impresses with deep valleys, tall mountains, and enchanting landscapes shaped by glaciers and volcanoes.
Glencoe was also a popular filming location for various Harry Potter movies.
Tip: Looking for adventure? How about a thrilling and exciting kayaking tour? This is possible, for example, on Loch Leven.
Place 8: Kelvingrove Art Gallery
The Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow should definitely be on your travel itinerary. Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and has a very different charm compared to Edinburgh.

The Kelvingrove Art Gallery is a free attraction housing internationally significant collections. Among them, you'll find numerous historical exhibits, weapons, armor, and paintings from various eras.
Did you know? Many now-international artists began their music careers in Glasgow. These include Snow Patrol, Amy Macdonald, Franz Ferdinand, and The Simple Minds.
Place 9: Skara Brae
Skara Brae was discovered after a storm in 1850. After the storm, some buildings were found under the dunes, initially examined with little care.
In 1999, Skara Brae was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To this day, Skara Brae is still considered the best-preserved settlement of the Neolithic Era in Europe.
5,000-Year-Old Settlement
