More than just a sea: the North Sea

Green dikes, a straightforward 'Good Morning', crab sandwiches, and a rough sea that constantly recedes to reveal the mud flats: this is the German North Sea coast. Whether it's sunny or dreary, a trip to the North Sea usually means enjoying fresh, salty air. We will tell you where to do this best in our Top 10 North Sea Attractions list!

Feeling wanderlust? Book great short trips to the North Sea now!

1st place: The Wadden Sea

It's no wonder this natural phenomenon tops our North Sea Attractions chart: the Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest of its kind. The seabed exposed at low tide is called the mudflat and is walkable. On a guided mudflat walk, you will learn a lot about the Wadden Sea and its inhabitants. Of course, you can also venture onto the mudflats alone - just be especially careful and always stay near the coast, as the tide comes in faster than you might think.

Tip: A mudflat hike south of the island of Pellworm is especially interesting. Here you can find remnants of the legendary sunken city of Rungholt. Clay shards and the like remind visitors of the 'Atlantis of the North Sea'.

2nd place: Sylt

Alongside other popular North Frisian islands like Föhr or Amrum, Sylt stands out as a holiday destination. With its unique shape, inviting white sandy beaches, and thatched-roof houses nestled between dunes, the North Sea island has been attracting not just the upscale tourist crowd for ages.

The island, part of which is situated off the coast of Denmark, is perfect for true gourmets: Sansibar, Gosch, and the two-star restaurant Söl'ring Hof are just some of the well-known culinary destinations in Sylt. But sports enthusiasts, adventurers, and those seeking relaxation will also find plenty of enjoyment here. The Experience Center Natural Forces Sylt or the Sylt Aquarium are particularly recommended for a family vacation at the North Sea.

And the best activity on Sylt? It remains: walking to the beach, renting a beach chair, gazing at the sea, and listening to the seagulls.

3rd place: Crocus Bloom Husum

Every spring, the charming town on the North Sea bursts into bloom with shades of lilac. Over 4 million crocuses sprout from the ground of the Husum Castle Park starting in March. Monks are said to have planted these little flowers here more than 400 years ago - and the residents of Husum and its visitors are grateful, as the crocus bloom is a beautiful spectacle.

However, visiting the town in Schleswig-Holstein is worthwhile during any season. For example, the Theodor Storm House - the residence of the poet is now a museum showcasing some of the original living spaces of Storm. You should definitely check out the cute harbor of Husum as well!

4th place: The East Frisian Islands

This elongated chain of islands off the East Frisian coast (Lower Saxony) is a popular destination for many vacationers. The many beautiful islands are especially favored by families and pet owners, as the abundance of nature and the wide range of holiday homes and apartments allow for a relaxed holiday experience here.

Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog, Wangerooge - these seven islands are affectionately referred to as the 'pearl chain of the North Sea'. Borkum is the largest of the islands, while Norderney has the largest town. Alongside the major islands, you will also find a few smaller, uninhabited islands here.

So which island is right for your North Sea vacation? Well, that's something you have to decide for yourself, as the East Frisian Islands are indeed very different from each other. You can visit individual islands on a day trip to the North Sea and stay on the mainland. Particularly popular with tourists are the towns of Carolinensiel and Altfunnixsiel.

5th place: Seal Station Friedrichskoog

This is one of the most popular North Sea attractions: the cuddly creatures with button-like black eyes charm both children and adults alike. The breeding station for seals and common seals is dedicated to proper animal care and environmental protection, and is a non-profit organization reliant on donations and admission fees. So with your trip to the North Sea, you're doing something good! The Seal Station Friedrichskoog houses a variety of marine mammals that you can observe both in the water and on land. Here come all the lonely or injured seal pups of Schleswig-Holstein. Seal pups? Those are the adorable baby seals. Their name comes from the cries they emit.

6th place: The Halligen

The small marsh islands off the North Sea coast are called Halligen, which are completely submerged during storm surges. The 10 Halligen that still exist today can be found around the island of Pellworm - only 7 of them are inhabited year-round. How can one live on an island that is only a few meters above sea level and often simply disappears beneath the waves? Pragmatically and weatherproof as they are, the North Frisians have simply built small hills where they have constructed their houses - the Warften. A particularly lovely walk can be taken on the Hamburger Hallig, which is also the easiest to reach: it is merely a peninsula. Here you can observe a variety of interesting birds and feel the entire rugged atmosphere of the North Sea.

7th place: St. Peter Ording Beach

If you're planning to 'quickly' swim in St. Peter Ording, you're in for a surprise. The beach is a full two kilometers wide - so you should plan a longer march to the water. But these extraordinary dimensions of the 12-kilometer-long beach make St. Peter Ording a genuine top attraction on the North Sea. The town in Schleswig-Holstein offers plenty of space and almost always has a nice breeze, making the beach and sea a popular spot for many athletes. In 2015, the Kitesurf World Cup was even held here. So, take off your shoes, and take a long walk on the beautiful beach of St. Peter Ording! Your kids will definitely be able to let loose here.

By the way, the town on the Eiderstedt peninsula has its own sulfur spring, which is why the place is also referred to as a North Sea spa and sulfur bath.

Good to know: St. Peter Ording is also well-known due to its high presence in films and shows. Have you seen 'Against the Wind', for example?

8th place: Lighthouse Büsum & Museum Harbor

The numerous lighthouses are the landmarks of the North Sea coast. A particularly beautiful one stands in Büsum. This lovely town is a North Sea spa and boasts the largest cutter harbor in Germany. Here you can buy delicious crabs directly from the cutters! - There is no better North Sea feeling. The old lighthouse located right at the museum harbor of Büsum shines in classic red and white and is nearly 22 meters tall. Built around 1912, the tower still serves as a guide for approaching ships and radiates its light for a full 19 nautical miles into the sea.

9th place: The Nolde Museum Seebüll

Emil Nolde, one of the most renowned painters of Expressionism, was born in North Frisia. He lived across the German-speaking area but always felt connected to his homeland, present-day Schleswig-Holstein. In 1926, he and his wife Ada purchased a vacant Warft in Neukirchen and named it 'Seebüll'. The house is now a museum that houses many of the most beautiful paintings of this extraordinary artist. The vividly colorful flower garden in front of the house, where you should definitely linger on nice summer days, immediately reminds you of the opulent colors of his works. Here you can also find the crypt where both Emil Nolde and his wife are buried. The Nolde Museum Seebüll is a must-visit not only for art-loving North Sea vacationers!

Interesting to know: During World War II, Nolde's works were classified by the Nazi regime as 'degenerate art', and he was banned from working as an artist. However, Nolde continued to paint. His neighbors helped him against the regime's persecution and hung cloths from their windows as a warning whenever someone approached the house. As a thank you, Nolde gave paintings to his neighbors - some of which still hang in the surrounding houses today.

10th place: The Multimar Wattforum Tönning

The Wadden Sea is one of the most interesting natural phenomena in our world. At the Multimar Wattforum in Tönning, you can learn everything about the mudflats and their inhabitants. In this modern building, located right next to one of the countless green dikes of the North Sea, you will find fascinating information, interactive games, and many exciting aquariums. A visit to the information center for the Wadden Sea National Park is especially worthwhile during a family holiday at the North Sea. The adjoining playground of the Wattforum is also quite impressive!

Tip: From Nordstrand or Büsum, you can take a combined trip. This way, you'll experience both the Wattforum and enjoy an exciting boat trip to the seal banks.

Do you crave even more sea and coast? Then treat yourself to a lovely holiday by the sea! And if you've fallen in love with the far north, don't miss a visit to the cities of Hamburg, Lübeck, or Kiel.
