240 kilometers long and 30 kilometers wide, the Mecklenburg Lake District stretches over an area of 6,014.4 km² from Schleswig-Holstein to Brandenburg. This accounts for 5.6 percent of the Mecklenburg land area.

The Müritz is the largest lake within the lake landscape, covering 109 km², followed by the Schweriner Lake which is 62 km² in size.

This natural landscape was formed 18,000 years ago by melting glacial ice.

Over 1,000 lakes and rivers make up the Mecklenburg Lake District.

There are numerous sights and attractions around the Mecklenburg Lake District. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has, among other things, the highest density of castles in continental Europe.
