Almost all attractions in Lüneburg can be easily reached on foot. The best starting point is our number 1 attraction in Lüneburg.
The large square 'Am Sande' is the oldest square in the city and simultaneously marks the center of the old town. The square is framed by countless old buildings, whose facades are adorned with the city's characteristic stepped, spiral, and pointed gables.
From this square, the main shopping streets of the city branch off, where you will also find many nice cafés.
Place 2: Lüneburg Water Tower
This impressive tower from 1907 towers high above the rooftops of the city. The former water tower is now a museum and observation tower for Lüneburg residents and visitors.
An elevator takes you to the 6th level of the tower - from here, you have a breathtaking view of the beautiful city on the Ilmenau.
Tip: Fans of soap operas will already know the romantic Lüneburg from television: The popular series 'Rote Rosen' is filmed here.
Place 3: Stintmarkt
In the cozy Lüneburg harbor lies the colorful street Am Stintmarkt.
Pub Street by the Ilmenau
Once the Stintmarkt was the trading place of the Hanse - today, quaint and lively pubs line this street. Especially among the many students in the city, this little pub street is very popular.
In summer, you sit here among many others with a beer or wine in a romantic setting right by the Ilmenau.
Place 4: Old Town Hall
The old town hall is a true highlight of the Lüneburg attractions. The town hall complex consists of various buildings that were built as early as the 13th century and is a good example of the medieval architecture that predominates in the city.
Most of the town hall can still be visited today, with many interesting facts to discover.
Place 5: St. Johannis Church & St. Michaelis Church
St. Johannis Church
It may be the most famous landmark of Lüneburg: The St. Johannis Church with its crooked tower is one of the oldest baptismal churches in Lower Saxony. Here you can walk in the footsteps of Johann Sebastian Bach, who learned to compose in this church.
St. Michaelis Church
The St. Michaelis Church is also a real highlight of the Lüneburg attractions. Its baroque dome can be seen from afar. Be sure to take the road 'Auf dem Meere' on your way to the church - this picturesque alley is one of the most beautiful streets in Lüneburg.
Place 6: Lüne Monastery
The former Benedictine convent is just a short walk from Lüneburg's old town and is a true oasis of tranquility.
On today's site, the old buildings from 1172 are nestled among orchards and ancient trees. Here you will also find the Lüneburg Textile Museum.
Place 7: German Salt Museum
In the Middle Ages, Lüneburg became a wealthy city through salt trading. Today, this is also commemorated by the German Salt Museum. Until 1980, the Lüneburg salt works were located here - and now you can learn everything about salt, salt production, and trade.
Place 8: Kalkberg
In a beautiful park right next to the old town stands the next Lüneburg attraction. Here, you can climb the so-called 'Kalkberg' - a hill made of gypsum pushed to the surface by the underlying salt dome.
At 58 meters high, you can enjoy a great panoramic view over the Hanseatic city and the surrounding area.
Place 9: Old Crane
In the old harbor of the Hanseatic city, there was once hustle and bustle - this was the transfer point for the salt from the salt works.
Today, life here has not become quieter - it is undoubtedly influenced by the many restaurants and pubs that line the street. Here you will also find the historical industrial monument: the old crane. The crane, built in 1797, still shapes the cityscape and is still functional.
