Fantastic Last Minute Travel Destinations

Is there anything more beautiful than the anticipation of the next vacation? Particularly in the summer months, that's hard to beat. Travelers just want to pack their bags, head to the airport, and start their next adventure. Some book their vacation well in advance while others love to decide on a destination at the last minute.

For those who still need a little help deciding, we took it upon ourselves to search for truly stunning last-minute destinations for this summer. We examined a total of 60 different destinations, looking at flight times from Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and Frankfurt, as well as the average air and water temperatures in July and August.

Additionally, we also assessed average hotel prices for one night in at least a 4-star hotel from Friday to Saturday at the corresponding destination. For this, Google Hotel Search was used, and the average value was determined from the average prices from July 8-9 and August 12-13.

In the quest for particularly enticing last-minute destinations, we closely examined numerous vacation spots. Ultimately, key factors in our selection were that there are direct flights from at least three of our chosen airports and that these flights last no longer than 4.5 hours to make a short trip worth it. It was also important to ensure that vacation countries did not duplicate each other.

Tastes vary, as is well-known-so do preferences for vacations. Sun worshippers love warm, sunny weather by the sea, while those who don't like it quite as warm might head north in the summer, and city trip fans enjoy strolling through the sunny streets of their favorite metropolises. With our 13 enchanting last-minute destinations, there's surely something for everyone.

Destination 1: Izmir, Turkey

Last-minute doesn't always have to be expensive. Travel to Turkey is often affordable and very popular. Besides Alanya and Side, another city particularly beloved by German travelers is Izmir. This charming coastal city is not only the third largest city in Turkey but also the greenest metropolis in the country.

With an average overnight price of just €26.50 per person, a vacation in Izmir is also a real bargain. Many hotels offer all-inclusive packages here. However, if you still want to eat out in the city, you'll find numerous local and international restaurants and delicious street food.

A must-see when traveling to Izmir is a visit to the Kemeralti Bazaar. At the market, you can find almost everything your heart desires: fresh produce, cafes, restaurants, traditional tea houses, souvenir shops, and countless stalls where you can buy just about anything.

In July and August, it gets very, very hot in Izmir: an average of 28.45 °C. If you want to cool off in the pleasantly warm waters of the Aegean, you'll have to travel a bit outside the city, for example, to Cesme's Ilca Beach, which is also referred to as the Caribbean of Turkey.

Other highlights in the city of Izmir include Kültürpark, Konak Square, Hisar Mosque, and, although not directly in Izmir, the ruins of Ephesus.

Destination 2: Malta

Summer, sun, beach, and charming little towns await vacationers on the southern European island of Malta. Whether you're in the mood for swimming, shopping, culture, or wild parties, this beautiful Mediterranean island offers the perfect mix of everything.

Direct flights from Berlin, Munich, and Frankfurt to Malta take less than 3 hours, while travelers from Hamburg need to make one stopover. Once on the island, there's an endless amount to discover. How about a boat trip to the Blue Grotto or the Blue Lagoon on Comino, visiting the St. Paul Catacombs, spending a fun day in Popeye Village, or enjoying an incredibly delicious piece of chocolate cake above the rooftops of Mdina?

Mdina may also ring a bell for Game of Thrones fans. The city served as a filming location for King's Landing in season 1. If you pay close attention, you'll spot even more filming locations for the famous series on Malta.

With average outdoor temperatures of 26.85 °C and water temperatures of 24.5 °C, the island's many beautiful beaches provide a refreshing escape. For party enthusiasts, an evening in St. Julian's and Paceville is highly recommended, where young and old meet to celebrate.

Thanks to the excellent and affordable bus network on the island, travelers in Malta can easily forgo a rental car.

How about spending a summer vacation in one of the most exciting and contrasting cities in the world? Off to Tel Aviv! Here, modernity meets tradition like no other of our last-minute destinations. The flight from Frankfurt takes 4 hours and 18 minutes, just allowing it to make our list. Unfortunately, there is no direct flight from Hamburg to Tel Aviv.

Thanks to its fantastic location on the Mediterranean and its 14 km of coastline, a vacation in Tel Aviv is perfect for sunbathers, beach enthusiasts, and water sports lovers. With an average temperature of 27.5 °C, the sea in Tel Aviv is truly inviting.

However, Tel Aviv has much more to offer: a wealth of culture, impressive Bauhaus architecture, exciting and diverse museums, endless shopping opportunities, a beautiful old town, and a vibrant nightlife.

Delicious and affordable food, fascinating street art, the trendy Levinsky market, and plenty of hipster vibes can be found in the urban neighborhood of Florentin. By the way, this is also a great area to book a food tour.

For a night in a 4-star hotel, you pay €122 per person in Tel Aviv. If you're looking for something cheaper, consider searching for nice hotels in Jerusalem. A visit to Jerusalem is definitely a must-see on a trip to Tel Aviv.

Destination 4: Thessaloniki, Greece

Greece is also among the most sought-after summer destinations for German travelers. They primarily head to beautiful islands like Crete, Corfu, or Santorini. However, there is much to offer on the mainland as well, including the famous capital, Athens, and the country's second-largest city: Thessaloniki.

This exciting metropolis is ideally located by the sea, making it a pleasant place to stay even during high summer temperatures. The average water temperature of 26.5 °C is absolutely perfect for endless hours by the sea. Moreover, Thessaloniki is a true bargain: A night in a 4-star hotel costs just €39.23 per person.

Thessaloniki is also a paradise for history lovers. Among the most impressive museums in the city is the Museum of Byzantine Culture and the Archaeological Museum.

Do you prefer a bit more luxury or beautiful white sandy beaches? Then head to Chalkidiki. This beautiful peninsula is just an hour away by bus and rivals Corfu, Mykonos, and others.

Destination 5: Menorca, Spain

Everyone wants to go to Mallorca, and that's exactly why we're recommending a trip to Menorca this summer. In July and August, it gets wonderfully warm at 25.3 °C, and the sea temperature is just as inviting at 25.5 °C, making it comparable to its sister island, Mallorca.

An overnight stay in a 4-star hotel averages €113.50 per person, making it a bit more expensive than Mallorca, but cheaper than Ibiza.

Menorca is known more for its relaxed beach vacations and rejuvenating hikes than for rowdy parties. The island boasts numerous well-marked hiking trails for various fitness levels, and with its beautiful diverse landscape, there is much to discover.

Highlights on Menorca definitely include a visit to the lighthouse at Cap Cavalleria and a trip to Binibeca Vell. From the lighthouse, visitors are treated to possibly the most beautiful view of the island's northern coast. The white houses and winding streets of Binibeca Vell are not only stunning, but are also a true Instagram hotspot. If you prefer to have the fishing village to yourself, it's better to visit in the evening.

A little tip for wine lovers: Menorca is home to numerous charming wineries with delicious wines, the most beautiful of which is Bodegas Binifadet, where they even offer wine ice cream.

Destination 6: Tirana, Albania

A destination that certainly isn't at the top of many people's bucket lists is Albania. However, Albania, and particularly its capital Tirana, has quite a lot to offer, from its culture to nature to a vibrant nightlife.

In the city center of the Balkan metropolis is Skanderbeg Square, which is the central and most important square in the country. In summer, you can explore all the key sights within walking distance at a pleasant temperature of 24.55 °C. These include the Skanderbeg Statue, the Et'hem Bey Mosque, the Opera, and the National Historical Museum.

If you're in the mood for some nature, hiking, and a breathtaking view, you should take the cable car up to Mount Dajti, which is 1,600 m high. Even though Tirana doesn't have its own beach, sunbathers and beach lovers won't miss out either: Lalzi Bay, located just about 20 km from Tirana, features a stunning beach that is especially popular among divers and families. There are also excellent restaurants and small kiosks available for food and drink.

And just because Tirana isn't a tourist hotspot yet, you can still enjoy an affordable vacation here. One night in a 4-star hotel costs a mere €33.75 per person. Prices for food and drink are also relatively inexpensive. An Aperol Spritz in a restaurant in the city center can be had for 300 ALL (about €2.50).

Destination 7: Pula, Croatia

A great last-minute summer destination for history buffs is Pula in Croatia. It is one of the oldest cities in Croatia, and the city's landmark, the amphitheater, was built back in the 1st century. Anyone who wishes can visit the impressive arena or even watch concerts or films in this unique setting in the evening.

With a sunny average temperature of 24.2 °C, it's a pleasure to stroll through the streets of the beautiful old town, passing the Arch of the Sergii, the Temple of Augustus, and Pula Fortress.

The stunning beaches and the average 25 °C warm Adriatic provide the ideal refreshment. From family-friendly beaches to dog beaches to adventurous bathing coves, there's something for everyone here. Particularly beautiful and somewhat secluded is the Verudela Bay, which can be reached on foot (with sturdy footwear!) or by kayak.

In the Bay of Pula, there's also a small highlight for all Joko and Klaas fans and lovers of lost places-the island of Otok Katarina. This former military site was the setting for an episode of the hit show Joko vs. Klaas - The Duel Around the World, where both teams got to play a unique form of 'Capture the flag.'

Destination 8: Lisbon, Portugal

If you prefer warm summers that aren't too hot, Portugal is the right choice. Thanks to its location on the Atlantic, this beautiful country enjoys a milder climate. The same goes for Portugal's stunning capital, Lisbon, where the thermometer averages 24 °C in July and August, and an overnight stay costs only €66.50 per person.

With these pleasant temperatures, a city tour is truly bearable even in the height of summer. However, if you want to cool off in the 19 °C cool Atlantic waters, you'll have to travel a bit outside of Lisbon, as the city unfortunately doesn't have a beach. Nearby, water lovers can find several particularly beautiful spots that are especially popular among surfers and other water sports enthusiasts.

In Lisbon itself, there's an endless amount to see and experience. Among the most famous sights are undoubtedly the Castelo de São Jorge, the Panteão Nacional, and the Torre de Belém. If you're looking to explore the city not just by foot and not in a hop-on, hop-off bus, you should take a ride on the iconic yellow tram. Line 28 is best for this, but it can get quite crowded during the day. It is definitely recommended to jump on at the first stop and enjoy the ride in a full train.

A visit to the Alfama district must not be missed. Here visitors are welcomed by tiny alleys, Portuguese exuberance, numerous sights, and plenty of charming little cafes.

Destination 9: Venice, Italy

Germans love la dolce vita-so a last-minute destination in Italy is a must! For a spontaneous summer journey, the impressive canal city of Venice is particularly suitable, not only because flights are usually very affordable, but also because the flight time is unbeatable. From Munich, it takes just one hour, and even from Hamburg-geographically the farthest-it's less than two hours.

Bridges, the famous Grand Canal, and romantic gondolas shape the image of Venice and adorn numerous postcards and Instagram accounts. How lovely would it be to see all this with your own eyes and enjoy a good Italian coffee on Piazza San Marco? So off to bella Italia!

In the summer months of July and August, temperatures climb to a pleasantly average 23.55 °C, but it can indeed get quite hot in the summer in Venice. Thankfully, there's always a delicious ice cream to help cool you down.

The beautiful city is also famous for its lagoon islands. One of the loveliest is Burano, known especially for its colorful houses and delicious fried seafood. The best way to reach Burano is by taking the water bus No. 12, which also stops at three other charming islands: Murano, Torcello, and Mazzorbo-perfect for Italian island hopping.

The Côte d'Azur is just for the rich and beautiful? No, it's an ideal destination for anyone who loves to vacation in truly beautiful spots. The French city of Nice is located right on the Mediterranean and is undoubtedly one of the most gorgeous summer destinations in Europe.

With an average sea temperature of 23.25 °C, the water is pleasantly warm, and the beautiful beaches practically invite you to swim and sunbathe. Along the famous Promenade des Anglais, people stroll, dine deliciously, and sip on a spritzy Aperol-of course, with an indescribably beautiful view of the sea. By the way, the best view of the city can be enjoyed from La Colline du Château; the climb is worth it!

Nice's old town shines in warm colors and is full of charming cafes, small souvenir shops, and a delightful French flair that captivates vacationers from all over the world. If you love flowers and fresh fruit, you will surely fall in love with the beautiful flower market, Marché aux Fleurs.

A night in a chic 4-star hotel averages €107 per person, which is not a steal, but also not unaffordable.

A little tip for those looking to discover more of the Côte d'Azur: For €1.50, take the bus to many other beautiful cities like Cannes, Menton, Antibes, and even to Monaco!

Hand on heart: Who hasn't dreamed of a summer in Sweden? Mild summer nights, delicious cinnamon rolls, enchanting museums, and beautiful colorful houses promise a fantastic city trip. With an average temperature of 17.65 °C, strolling through one of Scandinavia's most beautiful capitals is especially enjoyable.

From Hamburg and Berlin, flights to Stockholm take just 1 hour and 33 minutes, and from Frankfurt and Munich just over 2 hours. When flight times are favorable, it's even possible to take an exciting day trip to Stockholm. For those wanting to stay longer, the average cost for a night in a 4-star hotel in July and August is €65.75 per person.

Stockholm consists of 14 islands, so it's no surprise that there are many small beaches where sunbathers can also enjoy themselves.

Among the absolute highlights of the city are the open-air museum Skansen, the Drottningholm Palace, a stroll through the famous Gamla Stan, and a ride on the subway-or better yet, the artistically designed subway stations.

Over 100 artists have transformed 90 Stockholm subway stations into true works of art. If you want to see the unique stations, it's best to buy a 24-hour ticket for 165 SEK (about €15.44) and take a camera with a tripod.

Lush green meadows, pure joy of life, over 750 pubs, and a proper cold Guinness-that sounds like a perfect summer vacation in Dublin. Ireland's beautiful capital averages 15 °C in July and August, making it the perfect destination for those who cannot decide between city and nature. With a flight time of just 1 hour and 45 minutes from Hamburg and 2 hours and 25 minutes from Berlin, Dublin is really just a stone's throw away.

For those who love hustle and bustle, cheerful street music, a little shopping, and lively streets, Dublin's city center is a true paradise. In the popular nightlife district 'Temple Bar', pubs and small shops line the streets, and there's always something happening. Must-see places include the Guinness Storehouse, St. Patrick's Cathedral, and the Trinity College library with its world-renowned Book of Kells.

The city can also be wonderfully explored through a free walking tour or a pub crawl. Ireland's oldest pub is, by the way, located in Dublin: The Brazen Head serves not only cold drinks but also excellent traditional meals and live music-since 1188!

And who would have thought that you could also swim in Dublin? The great sandy beach of Bull Island and Sandymount invite sunbathers to relax, stroll, and splash around. A trip to Howth with a little hike to the lighthouse and fantastic views is also a must for a lovely short trip to Dublin.

When thinking of Reykjavik and Iceland, people often picture dazzling Northern Lights, icy snow landscapes, and beautiful nature. Very few think of a summer vacation on the island in the far north of Europe. However, a summer in and around Reykjavik is simply beautiful.

With an average of 14.3 °C in July and August, Reykjavik is not a destination for heat lovers, but it's certainly not cold. This makes a summer trip to Iceland worthwhile even for those who find it too cold in winter.

If you're reluctant to jump into 11 °C water, Iceland offers countless opportunities to swim in pools or hot springs. The most famous is of course the dazzling Blue Lagoon. If you want to save on the high entrance fee, you can also find free springs such as those in the geothermal area of Hveravellir.

The beautiful Icelandic capital also has much to offer. How about a day at the flea market, an exciting museum visit, a coffee in the colorful downtown, or a free visit to the famous Einar Jonsson Sculpture Park?

At €160.75 per person per night, staying in a 4-star hotel in Reykjavik is relatively expensive; however, a vacation in Iceland is definitely worth it!
