Grilling spots in Stadtpark - the classic in Hamburg
Cleanliness: 3.5 stars
Pros: central location, public restrooms, very large park
Cons: crowded, especially on weekends; overflowing trash cans
Leisure activities: mini-golf, jogging area, several playgrounds, chess field, boat rental, natural swimming area, beach volleyball
It is often said that without having grilled in Stadtpark once, one is not a true Hamburger. Indeed, Stadtpark is the Mecca for grill-loving Hamburg residents-and correspondingly well-frequented. Between May and September, the smell of barbecue fills the park, attracting grill fans from all corners of Hamburg to Winterhude. After feasting on sausages and such, visitors can relax on the green meadows or cool off in the beautiful Stadtpark lake. Freshly tapped beer can be found in Schumacher's beer garden. The two designated grilling spots are located on the festival grounds and on the meadow west of the wading pool.
Grilling spot in front of Strandperle: Grilling at the city's edge
Cleanliness: 4 stars
Pros: great meeting point for pre-gaming and celebrations, summer vibe with sandy beach, beautiful views of the harbor
Cons: very crowded, budget for drinks
Leisure activities: building sandcastles
Beach feeling in the city comes alive at Strandperle. With a view of the Hamburg harbor and feet in the sand, Hamburg residents can grill at the trendy snack bar 'Strandperle' while enjoying cold drinks. When the sun sets, the snack bar turns into a party hotspot. If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, this isn't the place. However, party lovers with a preference for grilled food will have a great time here. By the way, each visitor must bring their own food; salads and other sides are available at the 'Kombüse'.
Wedel Yacht Harbor - Sports & Fun with a View of the Elbe
Cleanliness: 4.5 stars
Pros: clean, beach club nearby
Cons: only two masonry grills, far out
Leisure activities: soccer field, ping pong tables, playground
The park at the Wedel yacht harbor is also a popular-and official-grilling spot in the Hanseatic city. However, grilling is only allowed at two masonry grills, so arriving early is advisable. If the grills are occupied, you can pass the time on the adjacent soccer field or at the ping-pong table. For the little ones, there is a playground, and the older grilling fans can enjoy a beach bar with delicious cocktails. The yacht harbor is also accessible by Elbe ferry.
Alsterpark - Schwanenwik and Fernsichtbrücke - Grilling meadows with plenty of space for romantics
Cleanliness: 4 stars
Pros: idyllic view by the riverside
Cons: busy-especially in the evenings and on weekends
Leisure activities: football, rowing boats, area for ball games, great photo spot
The Alster and its meadows are already among the most popular destinations for relaxed afternoons. In summer, grill enthusiasts flock to the meadows around 'Alsterperle' on the eastern bank or the quieter western side. The wooden chairs set up here in summer are quickly taken, yet there is still plenty of space for grilling. No wonder it seems like half of Hamburg is drawn to the Outer Alster when the temperatures are mild. Grilling is only allowed in the designated zones at Schwanenwik and Fernsichtbrücke, but here, grillers can enjoy the sunset by the water.
Rissener Kuhle - Grilling spot for families
Cleanliness: 4.5 stars
Pros: numerous masonry grills, some covered grills, tables & benches available, restrooms present
Cons: on the city outskirts, crowded on weekends
Leisure activities: playground, zip line, skate park, volleyball court
What was once a gravel mining area is now an expansive playground and recreational park that families flock to on weekends. The green area spans nearly 24,000 m² and offers several grilling and picnic options. While adults prepare the barbecue, kids can have fun on the climbing tower, swings, and slides, or try their hand at volleyball and streetball. Large groups of friends and families gather around the numerous masonry grills in good weather. If it starts to rain, they can simply seek shelter under the pavilion.
Altonaer Volkspark - Relaxed grilling in the public park
Cleanliness: 4 stars
Pros: well-designed diverse park, shelter in case of rain, public restrooms, usually very tidy
Cons: somewhat outside the city
Leisure activities: mini-golf course, forest learning path, playgrounds & climbing tower, hedge theater, long park path - ideal for jogging, viewing & rose gardens, beer garden & café
A little outside the bustling Hamburg city center, Altonaer Volkspark invites visitors with its wide green spaces, perfect for grilling. For fans of outdoor picnics, there are several designated grilling areas and a shelter in case the famous Hamburg 'Schietwetter' comes calling. The after-meal walk leads along the trotting track, to the mini-golf course, or directly to the Volksparkstadion, home of HSV. The oldest park in Hamburg also features a dahlia garden and several viewpoints.
Öjendorfer Park - A Quiet Family Paradise
Cleanliness: 4.5 stars
Pros: romantic fire pit, grilling spot ideally located by the lake
Cons: location
Leisure activities: adventure playground, two swimming spots, mini-golf course, ping-pong tables
Öjendorfer Park, although the third-largest park in Hamburg, is one of the lesser-known spots. It's great for grillers looking for a cozy and quiet place. The best spot to grill is on the meadow overlooking Öjendorfer See. Especially for families with young children, Öjendorfer Park is a true gem. After the barbecue, they can head directly to the mini-golf course or the adventure playground. For those wanting to relax post-grilling, the green meadows offer ample opportunity. The only downside is the park's location, a bit outside the city center.
Rotenhäuser Wettern - Small but Nice!
Cleanliness: 5 stars
Pros: quiet park, concrete rings for disposing of grill coals available
Cons: small park
Leisure activities: beach volleyball and streetball court, playground, ball game areas
Okay, the small park in Wilhelmsburg doesn't offer much room for grilling, but it does have two established grilling areas. If you enjoy relaxed grilling and happen to live in the area, this green strip is the ideal destination on a warm summer evening. Located in a quiet residential area, it's actually possible to grill here almost undisturbed. If you're still waiting for your grilled sausage, you can pass the time playing volleyball on the adjacent beach volleyball court. No wonder this spot attracts especially families and sports-enthusiast barbecue fans.
Green Center Lohbrügge: Grilling Away from the City
Cleanliness: 5 stars
Pros: beautiful view of the park lake, several masonry grills available
Cons: seating is scarce
Leisure activities: children's playgrounds, mini-golf & skateboard facility, petanque ground, game tables
Even those living in the outer districts of Hamburg don't need to miss out on their grilling fun. In the Bergedorf district, east of Hamburg's city center, there is a particularly lovely spot for barbecue fans to enjoy summer grilling. The Green Center Lohbrügge is the centerpiece of the large residential area around it and is now a recreational area unique in bustling Hamburg. Naturally, a large grilling area is a must-have here. It is located at Ziegelteich, the largest lake in the park, and offers several masonry grills. Grilling can be done to one's heart's content. For distractions, there's a mini-golf course, petanque, as well as chess and mills playgrounds. Little foodies can romp around on one of the playgrounds, at the skate facility, or on the large play ship. For Bergedorfers, it's certainly a convenient grilling opportunity!
Meyers Park: Family-Friendly with Some Drawbacks
Cleanliness: 3 stars
Pros: wooden tables, seating, & shelter available, family-friendly - quiet location
Cons: waste disposal
Leisure activities: children's play equipment, zip line, nearby horse stables with ponies & horses, playground
This Hamburg grilling spot is more of a forest than a park - spanning a whole 32.5 hectares. While one may only grill in designated areas, there is plenty of space for walking and even a small shelter with wooden tables and benches that can be used for covered dining and grilling. The park is family-friendly too with several dog-friendly paths and meadows as well as play equipment and a pony farm for the little ones. Perfect for a relaxed afternoon with a grill and drinks. The only downside: lately, there have been increasing complaints about littering at the grilling area, which the city now wants to tackle.
Haynspark - Meenkwiese: Grilling Spot with a View
Cleanliness: 4.5 stars
Pros: masonry grilling stations, seating available, plenty of shaded spots, wonderful view
Cons: crowded, especially near the wading pool in summer; some garbage found, limited grilling areas
Leisure activities: children's wading pool; Monopteros - ideal for a photo; playground; canoe and 'kissing' gondola rental; café
Directly along the Alster river, families and students grill in Hayns Park under shade-giving trees. The Eppendorf side mainly attracts runners and walkers. In summer, sausages and vegetables land here on grillers' barbecues. The best part is the view of the beautiful Winterhude houses on the opposite bank. A small wading pool provides cooling; and there are large green areas for football or frisbee. But be careful: it is especially important to adhere to the designated grilling areas here. After all, Eppendorf residents are comparatively strict when it comes to grilling violations and littering their beloved park.
Niendorfer Gehege - Grilling Paradise for Young and Old
Cleanliness: 4 stars
Pros: beautiful park facility, free restrooms
Cons: overcrowded in summer, few parking spaces, overflowing trash cans-especially on weekends
Leisure activities: animal enclosure, playground, ideal jogging paths, close to pony farm, forest café
Grill fans will find everything they need here: Niendorfer Gehege has several free and official grilling areas with seating for families and larger groups, where especially the former feel comfortable. The surrounding beech and oak trees provide the perfect atmosphere. The expansive reserve also houses numerous sunbathing meadows, two playgrounds near Bondenwald and Vogt-Kölln-Strasse, and the 'Waldcafé' with public restrooms. Thanks to many stone grills, you only need to worry about the grill food and charcoal, and can grill in peace. The only downside: if you don't live nearby, you'll need to plan for a longer commute to the Gehege in the north of the city.
Harburg Stadtpark - Langenbeker Weg
Cleanliness: 4 stars
Pros: several grilling spots, shelter available for rain, seating available
Cons: seating fills up quickly, trash problem in summer
Leisure activities: soccer field, playgrounds, leisure pool, cycling paths, some fitness equipment, ideal for jogging-long paths
Grilling in the green is the motto in Harburg Stadtpark. Stadtpark is an extension of the Harburg Hills and is characterized by gentle hills, wooded areas, and a large lake. Families and sports enthusiasts find countless recreational opportunities, such as a water playground, a boat rental, or a hockey field. In the southern part of the park, grilling is also allowed at the Langenbeker meadows. A spacious area is available here, providing not only ample space but also plenty of tranquility.
Michelwiese: 'Grill Away!'
Cleanliness: 4 stars
Pros: new eco-friendly grilling area, spontaneous grilling events possible
Cons: small park, often very crowded due to central location, use of grill costs money
Leisure activities: children's playground, ping-pong table
At the beautiful Michelwiese, the motto is well-established. Inspired by the Australian model, grilling fans can use the installed grilling stations to cook sausages and other grill foods. With a view of Michel and the Gruner + Jahr building, you can fill your belly here. The closed stainless steel devices are available for a small fee. You only need to bring your own grill food. Other than the grilling stations, the park doesn't have much more to offer. However, relaxing and enjoying a kickaround is also possible here. And for its innovative and eco-friendly grilling concept, Michelwiese is worth a visit. Mainly young Hamburg residents and students have used this service so far.
Dulsberg - Grilling Strip for Athletes
Cleanliness: 4 stars
Pros: good parking, plenty of waste bins
Cons: small grilling area
Leisure activities: near sports park
Small but practical! Grilling is allowed in Dulsberg on the green strip by the sports park between Dulsberg-Nord and Dulsberg-Süd. The green strip is lined with trees and bushes, offering grilling fans a little green oasis. Those wanting to grill should bring their food, charcoal, and a tall grill. After that, there's an opportunity for basketball or to switch to the adjacent sports park.
Falkensteiner Ufer - Grilling by the Elbe
Cleanliness: 4 stars
Pros: nice beach, not too crowded, enough waste bins available, grilling spot near parking lot - short walk for transport
Cons: Important to Note! It is also a dog beach
Leisure activities: building sandcastles
Idyllic doesn't get much better than this! Grilling at Falkensteiner Ufer is definitely addictive. Right by the Elbe beach, grilling fans can set up their own grill while enjoying summer vibes on the sandy beach with a view of the Elbe. Since Falkensteiner Ufer is somewhat secluded, it's also much quieter and less crowded than Elbstrand in Övelgönne. The grilling spot is easily accessible by bus 286 and S1.
Friedrichsberg - Green Area Eilbektal (Eilbeker Park): A Green Family Paradise
Cleanliness: 4.5 stars
Pros: small dock invites you to linger, clean & green
Cons: crowded in summer, very small park, few recreational options
Leisure activities: bike rental, playground, area for ball games, ideal for jogging
Grill lovers in Eilbek have reason to rejoice. In the park Eilbektal, there is a grill zone where grilling is allowed. On nice days, however, the small green park can become very crowded. A children's playground, shade-giving trees, and large sprawling spaces invite families to grill on Friedrichsberger Straße.
Hammer Park: Park Idyl, 16 Hectares
Cleanliness: 3.5 stars
Pros: very idyllic, natural
Cons: waste problem during peak times, no designated grilling area, no grilling spots available
Leisure activities: children's wading pool, playground, mini-golf course, ping-pong tables, paths for joggers
Hammer Park is located- as the name suggests-in the Hamm district. While it is not renowned for its peace and tranquility, Hammer Park is the exception. Here, there is ample space to cozy up on the grass and fire up a portable grill. The best part: The park remains somewhat of a hidden gem and offers many open spaces. These spots are also ideal for playing badminton, jogging, or playing table tennis or mini-golf. Dog owners, however, do not have a good opinion of grillers who leave their food scraps behind. Nevertheless, there are plenty of waste bins and containers to help keep the park as clean and idyllic as it is.
Elbpark Entenwerder: A Hidden Gem for Grill Fans
Cleanliness: 5 stars
Pros: beautiful location, view of the Elbe
Cons: somewhat small
Leisure activities: sunbathing, walking
Okay, by now, it should be well known that Elbpark Entenwerder is not only great for strolling and observing but also has a beautiful grilling spot. And yet, even on weekends, one usually finds a free spot for grills and picnic blankets. Just under 30 minutes from the city center, the newly designed Elbpark is one of the most beautiful green spaces in the city. With a view of the Elbe, grilling and chilling can also be enjoyed in the neighboring Traunspark. Grillers will find restrooms and tasty cakes as a sweet addition to their grilling fare in Entenwerder 1.
