What do the parks and lakes offer to grilling fans and what are the pros and cons on-site?

All 10 grilling spots in Munich are briefly presented here, along with their pros and cons and available recreational activities, as well as an evaluation of cleanliness for each location.

Grilling spot at Feldmochinger See - In paradise with a view of the lake Stars for cleanliness Top beautiful location by the lake, many shady spots Flop very crowded on weekends Recreational activity sand playground, mini-golf, volleyball courts, swimming

At the largest lake of the Three Lakes Landscape in northern Munich, professionals are at work. This attracts connoisseurs and gourmets among outdoor grillers. They occupy the best spots on the southern shore of Feldmochinger See already by noon.

Our tip: If you don't want to fight your way through the many grills, you should come early. If you want to impress, bring along a proper camping grill instead of a disposable one.

After the grill party, the refreshing waters of the lake, with good water quality over nearly 17 acres, beckon. If you're not in the mood for grilled food, you can also opt for the Seehaus restaurant and enjoy a beer there.

Fasanerie See: For nature-loving grillers Stars for cleanliness Top good access, free parking, shady spots Flop few parking spaces Recreational activities volleyball courts, table tennis, small skate park, large field for soccer, badminton, or frisbee, swimming

Although Fasanerie See is one of Munich's popular bathing lakes, it is not a top destination for grillers. This is great for those who want to grill their sausages in peace. The only downside is the water quality, which suffers every year due to the waste of the local water birds, making the lake quite muddy. For a refreshing swim, this is still good enough. Otherwise, you can grill with a large group and enjoy the tranquility in the northern city area.

Plus point: The lake and grilling zone are easily accessible by bike and public transport. From the S1 station Fasanerie, it's just a few minutes on foot to the grilling area allowed on the southern shore. There are also free parking spots for car drivers.

Lerchenauer See: Swimming & grilling by the lake Stars for cleanliness Top the most central lake in Munich, good access, shady spots Flop little peace by the meadows, no clean restrooms Recreational activities swimming, playground for children

First grill and then cool off in the water? That's possible at the Lerchenauer See in the north of the city. However, grilling spots are only available on the west bank of this popular excursion destination. Lerchenauer See is one of the smallest and oldest bathing lakes in northern Munich and attracts numerous city dwellers every year with its clear water and the lake beer garden Lerchenau. As part of the Three Lakes Plateau, around 8,000 residents visit Lerchenauer See annually, grilling their food with a view of the crystal-clear water.

Isar North: Grilling & chilling at Oberföhrer weir Stars for cleanliness Top beautiful location by the river, Isar is ideal as a fridge for drinks Flop very crowded, often dirty areas Recreational activity cooling off in the river

Those who want to grill by the Isar do not necessarily have to go to the popular - and always well-visited - Flaucher. North of the Isar, not far from the English Garden, barbecue lovers can also enjoy grilling with a view of the river. At the so-called Oberföhrer weir, located near St. Emmeran, there are several small grilling zones. Grilling here is much more relaxed than at the congested Isar banks further south. The quiet grilling spots are best reached by bike.

Our tip: If you don't want to transport your grill and supplies by bike, you can also take bus 187 (Rümelinstraße) and walk a few meters from the stop. The nearly 22-acre Isar Island was created in 1976 and 1978, and has long been one of Munich's popular excursion destinations.

Hirschgarten: Grill like kings Stars for cleanliness Top many shady areas, good access Flop no cons everything's great Recreational activity skate park, fallow deer enclosure, children's playground with climbing wall, water playground

And another park in Munich where grilling is officially allowed, even if only on a small grassy area. However, the Royal Hirschgarten in the west of the city offers gentle hills and impressive trees, providing the necessary shade where steak fans can escape on hot summer days.

You can reach the Hirschgarten within minutes from the S-Bahn station of the same name. If you plan a bike ride or a walk afterward, you can visit the nearby Nymphenburg Palace. There's a designated grilling area around the outskirts of the skate area. You can almost always find enough free spots for your mobile grill here.

Grilling fun at Lußsee and Langwieder See Stars for cleanliness Top ample shade, idyllic facility, shallow pebble beach - ideal for children Flop paid parking, very crowded on weekends Recreational activity soccer field, volleyball court, mini-golf, children's playground, swimming

The neighboring Luß and Langwieder lakes are popular destinations for sun worshipers and grilling fans. While grilling is permitted along the entire east shore of Langwieder See, the barbecue zone at Lußsee is restricted to two designated areas. On warm days, especially families and large groups gather here to enjoy the consistently mild water temperatures and freshly grilled sausages.

Located northwest of Munich, the lakes and the green park that separates them are easily accessible by car or train. The grilling area at the second-largest lake in Munich is also clearly visible from the parking lot.

Sendling Westpark: Grilling with multicultural flair Stars for cleanliness Top designated grilling areas, seating groups available, ample shade Flop often littered, very crowded by noon Recreational activity open-air cinema, play afternoons from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM in summer, six adventure playgrounds, water playground, blind garden

On mild summer evenings, Munich residents also flock to Westpark, just a few kilometers west of the Isar. While film fans cozy up in the open-air cinema, larger groups head to the official grilling zones. Especially around the lake, it can be challenging to find a free grilling spot. There are dedicated grilling options here, including stone grills with grills and seating areas around. People from all cultures gather here for evening gatherings. If you enjoy grilling with a multicultural flair, this is the right place.

Our tip: Like almost all public grilling areas, it's best to arrive early here, otherwise, the best spots will be taken. You'll have better chances in the less popular eastern part of the park. Happy grilling!

Grilling zone Isar South: Barbecue at Flaucher Stars for cleanliness Top ideal location by the river, some restrooms available Flop very crowded by noon, gravel banks uncomfortable for sitting Recreational activity cooling off in the river

As soon as temperatures rise in Munich, residents of Bavaria's capital are naturally drawn to the Isar. Between the English Garden and Flaucher, sun lovers, walkers, and runners mingle. The best part: This is also home to Munich's largest continuous grilling zone, stretching from Flaucher in the north to Großhesselohe in the south. A view of the water and beach atmosphere included. You do need to bring your own grilling equipment, but it's not far from here to the trendy Glockenbachviertel or the numerous beer gardens in the city center.

Tip for grilling on the Isar Riviera: To secure a nice spot, you should start grilling early. Grilling is allowed only on the gravel banks and within designated areas. Wild grilling is generally fined.

East Park: Relaxed grilling with garden atmosphere Stars for cleanliness Top ample space for grilling Flop no refreshment by lake/river unlike other grilling spots Recreational activities skate park, playgrounds, volleyball court, table tennis, Michaelibad

East Park is not exactly one of Munich's hot spots. Still, grilling can be done nicely here. Or maybe that's exactly why. After all, the chances of finding a nice grilling spot here are relatively good. You can set up your mobile grills on the city-designated grilling area. Nearby, a skate park, winding paths, and the Michaelibad await you.

But beware: Outside the grilling area, outdoor grilling is prohibited. For a post-meal stroll, the small ponds and gardens in East Park are perfect.

Don't want to be in the park? A refreshing alternative: Isar Rafting

Would you prefer to experience an adventure and not sit among all the other grilling fans? How about a refreshing alternative that is also truly Bavarian and guarantees grilling fun? With a rafting trip on the Isar, you can enjoy Munich from the water accompanied by a Bavarian band, while being treated to culinary delights from the grill.
