SPAIN - 17 Filming Locations for Your Road Trip
In Spain, you can discover 17 exciting filming locations. From ancient castles and historic cities to beaches and deserts - there is something for every type of traveler!
We recommend visiting the Andalusia region around the city of Seville. Here you can visit five filming locations with short distances between them.
Our tip: Planning a wedding? The Castell de Santa Florentina, which represents Dorne in the series, can be rented for such an occasion. There's nothing standing in the way of a GoT-themed wedding!
CROATIA - City trip promises 10 Filming Locations
Among GoT fans, Croatia is no longer a hidden gem. International tourism has been booming here since the filming of season 2. Since 2012, about $9 million is generated annually just from the series.
Split and Dubrovnik are a must-see for GoT fans. In and around Dubrovnik, you can visit 10 filming locations in just two days. Of course, GoT tours are offered, including to the Lovrijenac Fortress, where the tournament was held in honor of Joffrey's name day.
Our insider tip: The abandoned Belverde Hotel is a must for adventurous fans! Do you remember which scene took place here?
At the open-air grounds of the vacant hotel complex, located just 2 km from Dubrovnik's old town, the fight between the Mountain and Oberyn Martell was filmed.
MALTA - Small Island with Stunning Backdrops
In the early Game of Thrones seasons, the small island of Malta played a crucial role. Several fortifications served as the backdrop for King's Landing, and the Azure Window also contributed to the atmosphere as a unique location, including as the wedding site of Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen.
Unfortunately, the famous Azure Window can no longer be visited! It collapsed during a very strong storm. Nevertheless, a visit to the breathtaking nature on both islands is worthwhile.
When planning a GoT tour in Malta, consider a four-day tour to visit all 11 filming locations.
Our insider tip: A must is a visit to Fort St. Elmo. The fortress was not only a filming location but is also the National War Museum of Malta. You get 3 for 1 here, as the entry price also includes access to the nearby Fort St. Angelo!
NORTHERN IRELAND - Especially Popular from the First Seasons
With Northern Ireland, we associate castles, dense forests, and a rugged coastline. It's no surprise that directors found several GoT filming locations here.
The country has been transformed into the GoT kingdom of Winterfell since season 1. The GoT hype can be felt on-site not just as a tourist. It brought about £100 million to the Northern Irish economy.
Reasons for this include numerous locations like the Tollymore Forest Park, which offers special GoT tours. This tour in Tollymore Forest Park is particularly worthwhile. In two hours, three filming locations can be discovered.
Our travel tip: Rent a car and plan a one-week Northern Ireland coast tour. You can discover 18 filming locations along the coast.
Our insider tip: Many GoT experiences are also well accessible from the capital Belfast. For example, the Winterfell and Demesne Experience is only 40 minutes away. There you can try medieval archery or explore the locations by boat or bike.
ICELAND - The Land of the 'Wall'
The 'Wall' - every GoT fan knows the chilling scenes associated with it. This dreaded land beyond the Wall can be visited in several national parks. A trip is truly worthwhile, as Icelandic nature is absolutely unique and breathtaking.
Here, volcanoes meet glaciers - a "Song of Ice and Fire" indeed! The Mývatn Lake, along with the Lofthellir lava cave where Jon Snow and Ygritte found refuge, is particularly worth seeing.
Our insider tip: For an authentic GoT feeling, a visit during the colder seasons is worthwhile, when the national parks, such as Vatnajökull, are still covered in snow, making the glaciers appear even more impressive.
MOROCCO - Day trip to Essaouira is a Must
We have also found GoT filming locations in Africa. Here you can see the Slaver's Bay and the Free Cities. Travel expert Yvonne Streit advises: "As a Game of Thrones fan, you should definitely plan a day trip to Essaouira. Here, you can discover the ruins of the slaving city Astapor."
Essaouira is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with unique architecture and is truly worth a visit.
Our insider tip: Don't miss the historic port of Essaouira. Here you can not only see the impressive and ancient ships but also enjoy excellent cuisine. The city is famous for its fish and seafood dishes.
Extra tip for GoT enthusiasts
Can't travel? An alternative suggestion: The "The Music of Game of Thrones Orchestra" will be performing in Munich on March 10, 2019, or in Berlin at the Tempodrom on March 16, 2019. The live concert is a must-attend event for all fans!
Concerts will also take place in other cities.
