The Top 10 Fuerteventura Attractions
Fuerteventura, the second largest of the Canary Islands belonging to Spain, is located in the Atlantic Ocean and attracts many sun-seeking and water sports enthusiasts every year. Emerald green waters, white beaches, and impressive sights are the hallmarks of this beautiful island. But local delicacies and freshly caught fish also offer a culinary experience. Especially the small restaurants at the ports and in the villages are very cozy, and the locals are always very hospitable.
Let us take you into the Mediterranean flair of Fuerteventura and inspire you with the presentation of the Top 10 Fuerteventura attractions for a desire for a beach vacation.
Number 1: Jandía Peninsula
The peninsula of Jandía, located in the south, is our number 1 of the 10 most beautiful attractions in Fuerteventura. Whether you are on a wellness vacation or a luxury trip in other parts of Fuerteventura, a trip to Jandía will delight you and bring exciting variety to your vacation program.
Fuerteventura-Jandía: The Most Beautiful Beaches and the Highest Mountain
Jandía offers two of the most diverse activities in Fuerteventura. How about climbing the highest mountain in Fuerteventura - the 807-meter high Pico de la Zarza (also known as Pico de Jandía)? And perhaps a refreshing swim in the sea at one of the most beautiful beaches in Fuerteventura afterward? These two excursion destinations are nestled in the largest nature reserve in Fuerteventura, the Jandía Natural Park.
Number 2: La Oliva
Among the most attractive sights in Fuerteventura, the historic town of La Oliva in the north of the island must not be missed under any circumstances.
Historical Charm
Walk in the town of La Oliva along old paths. Historical buildings still bear witness to the importance of the former capital of the island. Among the relics is the Colonial style Casa de los Coroneles on the outskirts, which was the seat of the island's rulers until the 19th century.
In the center of La Oliva, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria church immediately catches your eye. Particularly noteworthy: Unlike the otherwise bright white church, the black bell tower is made of volcanic rock. Be sure to take a glance at the inside of the ornately designed church!
Number 3: Corralejo Natural Park
Our third recommendation guarantees peace and pure nature. The dune landscape of the Corralejo Natural Park is located south of the same-named town. Here, towering sand mountains made of fine golden shell lime stretch over eleven kilometers.
Best Visited by Car
A well-maintained road, FV-1, winds through the national park. It is easy to find, just follow the signs.
Stopping to get out and walk barefoot on the warm golden dune sand is a fascinating experience for young and old. Having a picnic among the dunes is also a lovely experience that promises peace and relaxation.
Number 4: Playa de Cofete
At Playa de Cofete, you will find authenticity and solitude at the southern tip of the Jandía Peninsula. The beautiful Playa de Cofete stretches along the Mediterranean for eleven kilometers.
Beach Walks for Adventurers and Serenity Seekers
Far from mass tourism, even in peak season, you can let your soul dangle here with an extended walk.
A trip to Playa de Cofete is definitely worthwhile, even if one should prefer to forgo swimming here due to the sometimes strong undercurrents of the sea.
Number 5: Corralejo
Located at the northern tip of the island, Corralejo is a cozy town well developed for tourists with a lively past. In the 17th century, it was mainly used by pirates and smugglers; today, it attracts families with children and water sports enthusiasts such as surfers, kiters, and divers. The conditions for water sports enthusiasts here are ideal and are thus utilized in various ways.
Departure Point for Excursions
Island hoppers or day-trippers will find regular ferry connections to the neighboring island of Lanzarote, just eight kilometers away, at the port of Corralejo. Day trips to Lanzarote are highly recommended, as it also has many attractions and sights to offer.
Several well-preserved volcanic craters to the southwest are also worth seeing. The mountains of Volcanes de Bayuyo rise with their warm reddish-brown color up to 270 meters. They can be well explored via a hiking trail, which is partially paved. The hike takes you into geologically and scenically unique areas.
Number 6: Ajuy
Number 6 on our list of Top Ten Fuerteventura attractions is again a small village. Specifically, the remote fishing village of Ajuy on the west coast of the island. If you love authenticity and native traditions, you are in the right place. It is advisable to plan an entire day for this excursion.
Rugged Rock Formations at the Black Beach
Ajuy's past sounds a bit eerie. The black sand beach is also known as Playa de los Muertos - 'Beach of the Dead' due to its bloody pirate attacks.
But don't worry, there is nothing of that to see or feel today. On the contrary, you will be delighted by the enchanting nature surrounding Ajuy: rugged high rock formations, incredible steep coasts, and caves reaching up to 600 meters deep into the rocks. Much of this can be well viewed via paved hiking trails. Don't forget your camera amidst such fascinating photo opportunities.
Number 7: Salinas del Carmen
One highlight of Fuerteventura is Salinas del Carmen on the east coast. If you have always wanted to know and see how sea salt is harvested, you should not miss this Fuerteventura attraction. Many square collection basins stretch south of Caleta de Fuste over large areas in the hinterland of the coast.
Salt Production Museum
Next to the salt basins, the Salt Museum vividly conveys everything from salt extraction to trade. The outdoor facilities of the museum showcase the various stages of salt production. Perhaps after this, you will feel like purchasing sea salt as a souvenir for your loved ones at home?
Opening hours: daily from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Number 8: Betancuria
In the green west of the island, surrounded by lush nature and palm trees, lies the former capital Betancuria. Founded in 1404, it is visited solely by day-trippers. You will not find mass tourism here.
Historical Buildings and Old Craftsmanship
If you want to get an impression of the original life of the island, this is the right place for you. Historical buildings such as the impressive cathedral, mansions, and several museums can be visited.
You will also gain an interesting insight into the traditional production of cheese and handicrafts by taking a stroll through many places in this picturesque town. Strolling through the original town is simply fun.
Number 9: Pájara
Pájara, a place inland, lies in a fertile oasis and is surrounded by mountains up to 600 meters high.
Aztec Charm
After an impressive drive and arriving in Pájara, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Regla immediately stands out. Impressive Aztec ornaments from the 17th century adorn the church. Take your time to stroll through the small town of Pájara; there is a lot of Fuerteventura's originality to discover here.
After a walk through the beautiful old town, the best way to spend the evening is in one of the cozy taverns in Pájara with local drinks and dishes.
Number 10: Oasis Park Fuerteventura
On 800,000 square meters, you will find a diverse nature paradise with about 3,000 different animals. But the animal park offers even more. In the beautifully designed and spacious Oasis Park Fuerteventura, there is also a camel safari and animal shows. Sea lions, parrots, and crocodiles are guaranteed to be experienced up close like never before.
Additionally, the integrated botanical garden, with many tropical plants, invites you to marvel and linger.
