Visiting Mickey, Olaf, and Friends

In 1971, the gates of Walt Disney World Florida opened for the very first time. Since then, about 55 million people from all over the world embark on an exciting journey through legendary Disney stories every year. Disney World is more than just an amusement park; it is a vast resort that stretches over an incredible 15,000 acres, which includes:

4 theme parks

2 water parks

1 entertainment complex

numerous Disney Resort hotels

Due to the enormous size of Disney World, it's advisable to plan for several days for the visit. While a weekend trip is sufficient for Disneyland Paris, at least 4 days are recommended for its American counterpart. Our Disney World experiences have shown that visiting one park per day is ideal to relax and enjoy the many great attractions.

Attractions, Shows, and Parades in Disney World

While Disneyland Paris has 2 large theme parks with already incredible things to explore, Walt Disney World in Florida boasts 4 theme parks:

Magic Kingdom: The first of the 4 Disney parks featuring the famous Cinderella Castle

Epcot, which showcases future themes and exciting space attractions

Disney's Hollywood Studios, which transports you into the world of films

Disney's Animal Kingdom featuring animal and botanical diversity

For those who want to see and experience as much as possible, it's advisable to plan ahead which attractions to visit in each park. Park maps are available online for your convenience.

  • Epcot, which showcases future themes and exciting space attractions
  • Disney's Hollywood Studios, which transports you into the world of films
  • Disney's Animal Kingdom featuring animal and botanical diversity

Our tip: Visit the attractions you must see right at the beginning when the park opens. This ensures that you won't have to wait too long and will at least be able to experience your favorite attractions among the many rides.

Each of the four Walt Disney World parks is an adventure in itself. Each park is dedicated to its own theme and targets different age groups, which is particularly reflected in the selection of rides.

Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom especially makes the eyes of the youngest shine. Many attractions are designed for very young visitors, such as the musical boat ride in 'It's a small world' or 'Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin'. If you're looking for wild roller coasters and carousels, you won't find them in Magic Kingdom. However, there are many Disney characters ready for photos and autographs.

Magic Kingdom is the first themed park of Disney World. It opened in 1971 and is divided into seven different themed areas such as Fantasyland, Adventureland, or Tomorrowland. Here, you can also find the landmark of Disney World - the beautiful Cinderella Castle, where the spectacular Wishes fireworks take place. Among the most famous and popular attractions are the Splash Mountain log flume and the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Epcot

11 years after Magical Kingdom, the second theme park opened its doors. Epcot stands for 'Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow' and comprises Future World and the World Showcase. While the former focuses on humanity's technological progress, the latter immerses you in various cultures from around the globe. Highlights in Epcot include:

Mission: SPACE - a Mars flight where the centrifugal forces are simulated

Test Track - a car track where you take on the role of a crash test dummy

Jeweled Dragon Acrobats - stunning acrobatics from China

Disney's Hollywood Studios

If you want to dive into the glitzy film world of Hollywood, the third theme park - Disney's Hollywood Studios is the place for you. Here, everything is dedicated to films and television. Opened in 1989, it features attractions like the Freefall Tower of Terror, the Block Party Bash Parade with Mickey and his friends, and the show Fantasmic - a live show filled with fabulous light, fireworks, and laser effects where Mickey faces off against Disney villains.

Another highlight is the Star Wars Weekends that take place every year in May/June. Famous Star Wars characters are available for a big meet & greet. Even Minnie, Mickey, and friends are dressed in Star Wars costumes, there's a fantastic Star Wars parade, and much, much more.

Disney's Animal Kingdom

In the fourth theme park, things get wild. Disney's Animal Kingdom is dedicated to the preservation of wildlife and is home to around 1,700 animals from all over the world, including hippos, flamingos, and lions. The special feature: It is officially neither an amusement park nor a zoo. Covering 250 acres, the park opened in 1998 and is the largest of the four theme parks. It is divided into several themed areas such as Africa, Asia, or DinoLand U.S.A., and offers a safari through the African savannah with real animals. Another highlight is the Expedition Everest - one of the most expensive roller coasters in the world that takes you on a ride through the Himalayas.

What is the best time to visit Disney World?

Disney World is already a great experience in itself. The magic of Disney can be felt everywhere. However, during festive times like Christmas or Halloween, all four theme parks lure visitors with unique decorations, attractions, and events. Especially then, Disney World gets particularly busy. To avoid overwhelming crowds and long wait times, consider the following when planning your trip:

Avoid holidays and vacation times like Memorial Day, Christmas, or the American summer holidays. If you arrive during these times, you should expect extremely crowded parks and long wait times of up to 180 minutes.

Avoid summer: Between June and August, temperatures in Florida can easily climb to 40 degrees Celsius.

Our tip: Visit Disney World in Orlando, Florida ideally between March and May after Spring Break or in the fall between September and November. This way, you can enjoy moderate wait times and pleasant weather without extremes.

Disney World Tickets - How much does the visit cost?

As with Disneyland Paris, a visit to Disney World is definitely not one of the cheapest vacation activities. However, there are tricks and tips to save real money. There are significant price differences based on ticket choices, length of stay, and travel period.

Tip 1:

The entrance prices of Disney World Parks vary depending on the length of stay. The longer you stay, the cheaper the tickets become on a daily basis. For a one-day visit to a park, you pay about $99 per person. For a 2-day stay, it's $96, and for 10 days, it's only $44 per day.

Tip 2:

Buy your Disney World Orlando tickets online in advance. There are two good reasons for this: Firstly, tickets at the counters are very expensive. Buying tickets online in advance can help you save money. Secondly, you also save time that you would spend waiting in long lines at the counters.

Please note: Children aged 10 and older are considered full-price attendees, and separate tickets must be purchased for the water parks. The price for this is around $62 per person.

Tip: If you stay for at least 4 days, the Hopper feature of the tickets becomes worthwhile. With this option, it's not just 1 day - 1 park, but 1 day - 4 parks.

Disney Hotels Orlando

Of course, Disney hasn't missed the opportunity to equip the spectacular resort with numerous hotels. The advantage: the Disney magic remains even in the hotel, and there are no long distances to travel back to a hotel outside of Disney World. Additionally, each Disney Resort Hotel is connected to all important points in the parks via the monorail, shuttle buses, or water taxis. So, you have immediate access to transportation when heading to the respective theme park in the morning.

Each Disney Hotel, like Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort or Disney's All-Star Movies Resort, follows a specific Disney theme and has various dining options and extras. There are four price categories for the hotels:

Value Resort Hotels: Simple, basic rooms that are sufficient for sleeping and are in a low price segment

Moderate Resort Hotels: Cozy rooms in a good resort location available at a moderate price

Deluxe Resort Hotels: These hotels equate to 4* and 5* segment hotels. They offer prime resort locations, high-quality amenities, and - high prices

Camp Resort (Camp Wilderness): This involves self-catering in tents and RVs at moderate prices

Important: If you stay in a Disney hotel at Disney World, the tickets - unlike at Disneyland Paris - are not included in the price. The entrance tickets for the respective park must be paid separately.

Buy or Bring? Food and Drink in Disney World

Disney World is full of adventures. And they will eventually make you hungry. There are many restaurants in the parks offering table service or self-service, so no one will stay hungry for long. They are divided into

Fast food restaurants

Restaurants featuring Disney characters

Restaurants offering all-you-can-eat buffet

The menus mainly feature American cuisine. Nevertheless, with the wide selection of restaurants, cafés, and bars, there's something for everyone. However, if you plan to eat on-site during your visit to Disney World, be prepared to pay a premium. Food and beverages are priced quite high, which unfortunately does not always reflect the quality of the food. Therefore, we recommend bringing your own snacks and drinks to Disney World to alleviate your travel expenses.

Tips at a Glance

Disney World Orlando is not suitable for a short vacation. To fully enjoy the resorts, you should plan a full day for each park. For the Magic Kingdom theme park, even 2 days are advisable.

Tickets with the Hopper feature, allowing visits to multiple parks in one day, only become worthwhile from the 4th day due to the enormous size of Disney World.

Travel during the off-season. In the high season from June to August, as well as during holidays like Christmas and Halloween, expect extremely long wait times of up to 180 minutes per attraction and heavily crowded parks.

Make sure to buy your tickets online in advance - this saves money and unnecessary waiting time at the counters.

Also, get an online Disney World Fastpass, preferably several weeks before your arrival. Then book your selected favorite attractions as well.

If you are traveling with small children and a lot of luggage, you can rent a stroller and wagon at the entrance of the theme parks. This is particularly convenient towards the end of the day when the little ones get tired and the whole family is exhausted from an eventful day.

Bring your own food and drink. Prices for food and drinks inside Disney World parks are extremely high.

Good planning is essential for a relaxed visit. For example, download the parking map before your trip and identify your favorite attractions. This gives you a good understanding of the order in which to explore the parks, how much time you need, and where each location is within the park.
