Crete Attractions - The Top 10 Most Popular Attractions
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and offers a particularly diverse landscape along with countless beaches.
Additionally, you'll experience the warm hospitality of the locals and delicious food, which you're sure to enjoy. With a pleasant Mediterranean climate year-round and 300 days of sunshine each year, it's undoubtedly a worthwhile destination for a beach vacation.
We have put together the top 10 most popular attractions in Crete for you:
Rank 1: Knossos
Knossos was an ancient site in the north of the island, near Heraklion, and remains the most important archaeological excavation site in Crete.
The Palace Ruins
The city is especially known for the Palace of Knossos. The palace of the then king rightfully received the European Heritage label. In its impressive 1,400 rooms, the royal family had ample space.
Today, you can leisurely stroll through the huge palace ruins and marvel at the world-famous dolphin fresco, which can be seen on a wall in one of the rooms. Most rooms now only have the foundations and stairs remaining, or only parts of the upper floors are visible.
Rank 2: Samaria National Park
The Samaria National Park is a UNESCO-protected biotope in the southwest of the island.
Hiking Through the Gorge
The highlight of the national park is a 16 km long gorge running from the center of the island to the Libyan Sea. This makes it the longest gorge of its kind in Europe.
On the 16 km long, quite demanding hiking trail, you can enjoy breathtaking views.
Please note that there are very few to no refreshment options along the way! The national park and hiking trail are open from May until the end of October.
Rank 3: Fortezza of Rethymno
The fortress of the island capital Rethymno is an old fortress ruin from the 16th century.
Visible from afar, the most striking building in the city of Rethymno is a fortress that boasts a completely preserved 1,307-meter-long wall with the main gate. Directly by the sea, it is certainly one of the city's landmarks.

Rank 4: Spinalonga
Spinalonga, officially Kalydon since 1954, is an uninhabited island in the northeast of Crete.
Island of the Lepers
The island became known for the establishment of a leper colony starting in 1903. This facility for leprosy patients (a highly contagious disease) remained in operation until 1957 and was one of the last leper colonies in all of Europe.
Today, you can safely take a ferry to the island and learn more about the history of the leper island. You can also visit the remains of the remarkable fortress of Spinalonga.
Rank 5: Arkadi Monastery near Rethymno
Symbolizing the desire for freedom, Arkadi Monastery is the most famous monastery in Crete.
Against the Turkish Occupation
It was once the center of resistance against the Turkish occupation. On November 9, 1866, it became a part of history and is still one of the most significant national monuments on the island today.
It is still inhabited by monks. The monastery also contains a museum that tells the history of the monastery.
Rank 6: Voulismeni Lake
Not a classic attraction, but a popular photo motif. Located in Agios Nikolaos, the freshwater Voulismeni Lake is 65 m deep. Since the lake has a diameter of only 137 m, it drops sharply at the edges.
Popular Excursion Destination
The lake is not only a popular excursion destination during the Orthodox Easter festival each year. According to legend, the goddess Athena once bathed in this lake. Reason enough to take a dip in the cool water yourself, right?
Voulismeni Lake is connected by a canal to the beautiful harbor of Agios Nikolaos, around which cozy cafés and taverns invite you to enjoy and linger.
Did you know? Due to its connection to the sea, the lake contains both saltwater and freshwater.
Rank 7: Cretaquarium
Get a closer look at the underwater world in Gournes. The Cretaquarium is one of the largest aquariums in Europe, primarily representing the colorful underwater world of the Mediterranean around Crete.
Crete's Underwater World
Marvel at approximately 2,500 different fish and marine creatures, from seahorses and octopuses to jellyfish. The main attractions are the giant turtles and the spectacular shark aquarium.
A tour through the aquarium is exciting and educational at the same time. With touch screens, video projectors, microscopes, and stereoscopes, your journey through the underwater world is interactive and additionally provides knowledge and information.
Opening hours: daily from 09:30 AM - 09:00 PM
Rank 8: Lefka Ori
Lefka Ori means 'White Mountains' and is the largest mountain range in the west of the island. It is often referred to as the Cretan Himalayas. The highest peak rises proudly to 2,454 meters in the range.
Due to its white sand, Lefka Ori is one of the few desert areas in Europe. Snow can even be seen on the peaks until spring.
You can view the picturesque massif from below or hike on one of the few paths into the mountains and visit the small original mountain villages there.
Tip: A tour into the mountains is quite challenging, requires good physical condition, and is therefore especially suited for experienced trekking enthusiasts. A hike in spring is particularly recommended. That's when Crete's plant diversity showcases its beauty. You might even spot one of the cute wild goats or encounter the unique Cretan horses.
Rank 9: Venetian Harbor Chania
Chania is the old capital of the island. Today, it is the green west of Crete and consists of the old town with the harbor and the new town.
The Harbor
The Venetian Harbor with its Egyptian lighthouse and a mosque is the highlight of the city. From the lighthouse, you can enjoy beautiful views of the crystal-clear water, the harbor, and the mountains behind.

Rank 10: Hippie Village Matala and Archaeological Museum of Heraklion
Our rank 10 has to be shared by two attractions because the decision was very difficult.
Matala
On the southern coast of Crete lies the small town of Matala. The town is historically known for the 'occupation' by hippies in the 60s and 70s. The atmosphere of that time can still be felt to some extent.
Along with the beautiful local beach, you can still visit the former hippie caves today. Since 2011, the Matala Festival has also been held annually. More than 10,000 visitors come to this event each year to enjoy the flower power vibe together.
Archaeological Museum of Heraklion
The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is the most important museum on the entire island. Few other museums have such an ancient collection, where the Minoan era is represented so comprehensively and vividly.
For this reason, it is also one of the most important museums in Europe. The 20 halls of the museum are organized chronologically and thematically connected.
Opening hours: daily from 08:00 AM - 08:00 PM
Did you know? The hippies' motto, 'Today is life, tomorrow never comes', is still visible on a wall in the city center.
